Coco is a Disney animated film by Lee Unkrich director (Toy Story 3). This film is inspired from the Mexico national holiday, ‘Day of the Dead’ or more known as Dia De Muertos that is a big family reunion between two worlds that separate from Land of the Dead to Land of the Living. The celebration are not a grieve moment, but a festivity.
The story tells about a boy name Miguel (Anderson), struggling to chase his dream to be a musician. He wants to create a song, he wants to sing, he wishes to be like his idol, Ernesto De La Cruz the legend in Mexico. Miguel has a secret place where he dedicated for de la Cruz. In that place, Miguel secretly self-taught to play guitar from old videos de la Cruz.Miguel hide his obsession because music is forbidden in his family tradition. There is no music, they do not let Miguel become like his great-grandfather which left grandmother Coco for the sake of his music career. However by the magical event accidental, Miguelstealing his idol guitar at de la Cruz graveyard and found himself in the Land of the Dead. In purpose to get back in the Land of Living, Miguel must seek of blessing from his dead family before sunrise, while find a way for how he can still play music without hurting his family heart, especially his parent and his grandmother.
What is the Mexico celebration of the dead people? Dia de los Muertos is a celebration day in Mexico to celebrate the people who have gone. In this day, they believe their ancestors that already passed away will come to visit to their living family, as long as their ancestors are still remembered. This tradition become the theme of this movie, one of the character helps Miguel to go back to the world because he wants Miguel to put his photo in his house, so that his family can remember and this character will not disappear. The dead people will not truly gone, until nobody in the world remember them. Our memories about them make the people we loved can still alive, even their ages have already run out.
The beautiful animation developed by Pixars/Disney animators with stunning images, especially The Land of Dead with colorful graphics.
Thumbs up for the Mexican audio and accents. Yap, this film displays Mexico tradition element that contain a lot of Latin musics. The choices of the Coco soundtrack are successful to support the entire movie. The Latin soundtracks like “Remember Me”, “Un Poco Loco”, “Everyone Knows Juanita”, “The World EsMiFamilia”, and “Proud Corazon”.
This movie is very suitable for family movie in the weekend. I’m sure, after watching it with your family, you will realize the importance of honesty, disappointment, dream, hope, love, memories, and the most importance thing is togetherness and support from family.
